Functional Fitness Training
In most cases the avid fitness enthusiast gets into a groove by identifying a fitness program comprised of exercises that seem to be a good fit when it comes to their initial needs and goals. After some period of time this fitness buff becomes attached to his/her program and often times will be resistant to change. Here are the 4 commonly known components for those wishing to maintain functional fitness:
1 Strength and Power – Building strong muscles is an asset to anyone whether an athlete or someone seeking general functional fitness. If you are simply pursuing functional fitness, strength training will result in lean weight gain, fat loss, joint stability, and the prevention of muscle imbalances.
2 Cardio – Cardiorespiratory training makes the heart, cardiovascular, and respiratory systems more efficient and stronger.
3 Flexibility – Include Functional Range of Motion (F-ROM) exercises, including stretching to enhance flexibility and prevent injury. Flexibility will enhance sports performance and everyday performance.
4 Sport Activity – this refers to the multi-directional exercises specific to a given sport. Hence, they are “sport-specific”. Study the movement of a sport to determine multi-directional (plyometric)
exercises of choice. Without giving attention to ALL of the above 4 components of cross training, your performance will absolutely suffer and you will be prone to injury. There may be imbalances in your development as a result of not considering all of these aspects which may mean that you will never reach your true potential.
