Most schools you see are sport based schools and don’t teach the skills to surrive a street fight with one person let alone several attackers.
For example you can’t spend five or ten minutes grappling on the street or in a bar and expect to survive. Sure you”ll get in good shape in the those type of gyms but who cares if you get your head kicked in by a second attacker. You also can’t use point tournament sparring or kick boxing in the street it won’t work against a knife or a tire iron.
Sport martial arts have their place but in order to really take out an agressive attacker(s) and get out safely specialized training is required. To use an old cliche Don’t bring a knife to a gun fight!

People are rarely mugged by only one person and the likely hood of your attacker having some type of weapon is very high.
